Fridge Critter: Turner the Turtle

I drew eight baby animals in 2001 and, eight years later, I'm remaking those illustrated animals into crocheted critters.

The sixth Fridge Critter is the turtle.

Turner the Turtle enjoys his privacy, so I was surprised to see him outside relaxing on a bed of moss.

This shy turtle avoids eye contact. If you look at him, he'll turn away:

And if you continue looking at him, he'll do this:

Taking the hint, I left Turner to enjoy his solitary summer afternoon.

If eyes are the windows to the soul, Turner prefers his windows closed.

  1. Well, I won't linger too long - as I would hate to upset Turner..
but next time he pokes his little head out.. let him know he's a little cutie pie..

    LOL

My girlfriend is reading over my shoulder.. a real turtle lover this one...
she wants to know how "Turner could actually get his head into that tiny shell"...

    LOL
    I needed the chuckle tonight
    :oP

I'm pretty sure turtles are the coolest animals ever.

  4. K4TT: If I see Turner again, I'll tell him you said he's a cutie pie. I wonder how a shy turtle reacts to compliments? If he blushes, I'll let you know! :D

Your girlfriend asks a good question about Turner's shell being too small to fit his body. Maybe his noggin is collapsible somehow? :D

PaisleyJade: Thanks! I was videotaping Turner's shell for the upcoming Fridge Critter video, and I dropped his shell into the creek a few times. Good thing it floats!

TADA's Revolution: If being antisocial leads to more attention paid to your personality-rich bears, then it's a good deal for us readers of your site! ;)

Of all the Fridge Critters, I'm also most similar to Turner.

niney: Thanks :) Yes, turtles are cool & cute. When I was a teenager, I had a pet turtle who ate worms and who couldn't poo. I eventually gave him away to the park's mini-zoo. Gah, the guilt!

  5. Adorable! I like his head being bigger than his body AND the cute yellow spots on his back! Have to remember those spots next time I make a turtle! Can't wait to see the last two!

  6. Your fridge critters are all so adorable. You should put together a book with the patterns. I would definitely buy it.

  9. Jana: That's super that you like Turner's oversized head and his yellow spots. When you make more turtles, maybe Turner could get out of his shell and socialize with them :D

Sarah: Yes, I was initially taken aback by Turner turning his back to me, but I guess he's not a fan of the paparazzi ;)

Beth Parker: Thanks! If I explore the pattern book avenue, I'll keep your encouragement in mind :)

mochaxlight: Wowza, your excitement is catching, thanks! I can imagine Turner getting energized by your cheer :D

  10. Eliz: hehe yes, he's a bit small for a two-armed hug, though I'm sure turtles like hugs anyway! I kept accidentally dropping Turner when he was in his tiny shell.

  12. Absolutely adorable. I love turtles...great job...what kind of yarn do you use? The work looks way too tiny to be worsted wt.

  13. tracebean: Double squeals will make Turner proud! haha Thanks!

Julie: Yes, turtles are lovable, even with the small risk of salmonella ;) I used Red Heart worsted weight yarn with a 4mm crochet needle, but just made the stitches tight. He might look smaller in the photos than he is in person. In the upcoming Fridge Critter video, you can see his size in relation to my hand :) Thanks!
