Stalled by Shyness
Do you get tongue-tied around strangers? Do you feel self-conscious in public? Maybe you're shy...
I felt especially shy when I was 18. That year, I ordered from a drive-thru window for the first time. I became so self-conscious, I paid for my order and sped away without my food:
That same year, I entered university. Without friends or familiar settings, I became too embarrassed to eat alone on campus. A public bench would've felt like a public stage:
One day, my grumbling stomach led me to a private setting:
I closed the door to my washroom stall and brought out my lunch:
When I bit into my sandwich, I realized how severely my shyness had stalled me, literally:
Since then, I've resisted my shy impulses. Though not every anxious battle is won, I can now eat alone on a public bench (reluctantly). Yes, my girlfriend still orders for me at drive-thru windows. But I have never again dined in a lavatory.
The best shyness-management tip I've followed: Act as if you're outgoing, and most people won't notice that you're shy. After awhile—ideally—neither will you.
Was there a memorable moment when shyness stalled you? Please share! And please dine sanitarily.
Bon appétit!

Woo's Hues *UPDATED*
The house is being re-painted here, so I've been moving furniture and storing stuff in cardboard boxes. Hectic!
Even Woomi participated in the home renovation process, though for the last time:
Woomi!!
UPDATE - August 6, 2010:
The home renovations are almost complete, so I've been crocheting again! I made these two yarn paint cans. Unlike Woomi, I'm sure you can tell the difference between "Apricot Dawn" and "Tangerine Dusk", right?

Woomi Paints!
Lately, Woomi has been developing his artistic side. Instead of dribbling a basketball, he's been dribbling paint! He even dressed the part, though artists rarely wear berets and curly moustaches anymore:
Woomi named his painting: "A Study in Burning: No. 2, 2010", which sounds kinda pretentious to me, but it's up to him. I'm just thrilled my crocheted waffles might have inspired him!
It's surprising to discover artsy sides to our alter egos, isn't it?
Bravo for finding new ways to express yourself, Woomi!

Woomi Plays Basketball
My recent eyeball escapade made me realize that there will be times when I'm unable to blog. Whether they're health-related or work-related, some urgent demands may require me to temporarily hand the blogging ball to another teammate.
Have you met Woomi?

Crocheted in late 2008, he's my more-athletic, more-mischievous alter ego.
Today, he returns to the spotlight with the debut of his own comic strip:

In my teens, I loved playing basketball. But I abandoned sports when an early onset of arthritis sidelined me from high-impact activities. Woomi—lacking bones—is arthritis-free and surprisingly aerodynamic:

Play on, Woomi! You're the star this week! Win one for the WooWork team!

Woomi
I have attempted self-portraits before, such as in this illustration from wootoons.com:
What would a self-portrait look like if made from yarn? At first, this would be the grisly scene:

It took me three clumsy hours to stitch these pieces together, but this time-lapse video mercifully reduces the process to a minute:
His name is Woomi:

My girlfriend and I brought Woomi outside to re-enact the woowork.com banner image:

This was the first time I crocheted in public, and I felt self-conscious. I'm aware of the double-takes when a guy is seen working with yarn. My girlfriend overhears "grandma" when she's making a scarf on the bus. But those stereotypes will fade as more people of all ages and genders become interested in yarn-craft.
After-all, Woomi is far from an effeminate senior citizen: he plays basketball and practices kung-fu:

To draw a self portrait, focus on the features that make you stand apart. That same approach can be used by anyone following their artistic interests.
